NDT Quick Reference Guide
A guide to assess which of the commonly performed non-destructive tests are fit for your needs
There are unique exceptions to each test, but this guide details the generally accepted capabilities of each test.

|Inspection||Ferrous||Non-Ferrous||Surface Crack Detection||Sub-Surface Crack Detection||Porosity||Shrinkage||Thickness, Hardness, or Void|
|Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
Induces magnetic fields into ferromagnetic materials to detect flux leakage.
(depth of 0.1”)
|Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI)
Locates fine cracks by letting a fluorescent dye accumulate in discontinuities.
|Ultrasonic Inspection (UT)
Transmits sound waves through a part in order to evaluate results on an oscilloscope.
|Radiography Inspection (X-Ray)
Transmits x-ray or gamma rays through a part to detect sub-surface discontinuities.
|Yes||Yes (except Lead)||No||No||Yes||Yes||Void|
|Eddy Current Inspection (EC)
A coil induces eddy currents into parts and measures resulting impedance / distortion.
(depth of ~2 μm)
Applies a fixed load and measures the depth of penetration.
